S.B. 678: Promote Clean Energy would amend the N.C. General Statutes to correct the definition of “renewable energy” to “clean energy,” adding nuclear power to this definition.
Nuclear power is the most efficient and reliable carbon-free energy source available. N.C.’s nuclear operators have a proven track record for safety and maintaining the reliability of the grid. By amending these definitions, it would even the playing field in the market for nuclear to be up against other carbon-free clean energy sources, like solar and wind. The current definitions in the General Statues limit nuclear from fair consideration for clean energy.
As North Carolina’s energy future advances with the passing of H.B. 951, it is imperative to the pocketbooks of ratepayers that energy is reliable and least cost. S.B. 678 will give nuclear energy equal opportunity to compete as the NCUC chooses the sources to maintain the reliability of the grid at least cost, while heading towards carbon neutrality.
