Civitas to Grade Vote on Bill to Aid Charter Schools – SB522

Senate Bill 522, Various Changes to Charter School Laws, makes several changes beneficial to the operation of charter schools.

First, the legislation would eliminate the prohibition on local tax dollars being used to buy buildings or other facilities. Currently, charter schools receive no funds for capital facilities.

In addition, the legislation would change the criteria of how renewal charters are calculated, require background checks for members of a charter school board of directors and remove the cap on enrollment growth for virtual charter schools participating in the virtual charter school pilot program.

Charter schools are public schools that have additional flexibility but are still required to follow the normal academic and testing requirements of traditional public schools. Charter schools currently provide quality educational options for over 100,000 students in North Carolina.

SB 522 will help charters prosper in North Carolina.

Civitas Action believes a vote for SB 522 is a vote for freedom and will grade any votes on this legislation in the House or Senate.
