HB76: Access to Healthcare Options is a bad healthcare policy for North Carolina and would vastly grow the size of state government. Expanding Medicaid infuses more public dollars into the healthcare system, further distorting the market, which was a major criticism of Obamacare all along.
The N.C. Senate’s proposal in HB 76 is a slight improvement over the N.C. House’s version by including the rollback of some certificate of need (CON) laws. However, the costs of this bill outweigh any of the benefits of this proposed CON reform. Adding upwards of 600,000 individuals to the Medicaid rolls will significantly increase demand on the healthcare system, which is already overextended in some cases. If North Carolina expands Medicaid, the plan must be paired with significant reforms to improve our state’s supply of healthcare services.
